Due to the absence of comprehensive programs to reintegrate former combatants into civilian society, a few non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have become the only source of assistance. These include the National Peace Accord Trust.

In 2007 I spent 6 months photographing South African freedom fighters taking part in a National Peace accord trust initiative of reconciliation and human rights.

Through trial, error and a spirit of hope the National Peace Accord Trust has come up with some “out of the box” interventions that have proved very successful in helping to turn angry aggressive

ex-combatants into people of hope and purpose.

Atlantic philanthropies use my images for their case study “No place by the fire”.
